Jack Gates - Ukraine
Art Brokerage: Jack Gates Ukrainian Artist: b. 1903-1997. An impressionist painter of landscapes, figures, still lifes, interiors, and marine scenes, he was known for paintings that expressed his feelings about his subject matter in a style that adhered to traditionalism at a time when modernist, abstract work was gaining widespread acceptance. His work also had the obvious influence of French Tonalist painter Camille Corot. Jacob "Jack" Gates was born in the Ukraine and began painting as a youngster in Russia where he did formal study at the National Academy of Design. He emigrated to New York City and attended the Art Students League as a student of Sidney Dickenson, Ivan Olinsky, and Robert Phillip. He then became an active teacher at the Salmagundi Club, of which he was an elected member, and taught cultural programs sponsored by various corporations as well as by the National Arts Club. In 1967, he was elected in New York to active membership of the Allied Artists of America, in 1980 to the Knickerbocker Society, and in 1981 to the Hudson Valley Art Association, which is committed to the advanced of traditional representational art. Early in his career, he was represented by the Hammer Galleries and The Central Art Gallery. Listings wanted.
